Elementary EducationWeb site: http://www.education.uiowa.edu/teachUndergraduate ProgramsThe College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, in collaboration with the College of Education, offers a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science with a major in elementary education. Both degrees are awarded by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The elementary education major prepares students to teach kindergarten through sixth grade. Students complete course work in education foundations and methods and in one of the following areas of specialization: art, English language arts, history, mathematics, music, reading, science, social science, special education, or speech/communication theatre. Students must complete the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences General Education Program and must satisfy all other requirements for graduation with a bachelor's degree. Students interested in pursuing a degree in elementary education must first be admitted to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; admission to the College of Education's elementary education program is not guaranteed. In order to be considered for admission to the elementary education program, undergraduates must complete a minimum of 33 s.h. of course work with a cumulative g.p.a. of at least 2.70. All students must submit Praxis I test scores with their application to the Teacher Education Program (TEP). Students should visit with an advisor or speak with Teacher Education Program staff about complete admission requirements.
