University of Iowa Upward BoundDirector: Jeanne MeyerWeb site: http://upwardbound.uiowa.edu University of Iowa Upward Bound, a division of Support Service Programs, hosts a summer academic program for eligible high school students from five southeast Iowa communities. Upward Bound students who participate in the summer program reside on the University campus for six weeks. They take mathematics, science, language arts, and foreign language courses and participate in extracurricular activities and field trips. Bridge students (those who have graduated from high school) enroll in University course work for the eight-week summer session. To be admitted to University of Iowa Upward Bound, students must: reside in the target area; be in grade 9 or 10; have a family income that meets U.S. Department of Education low-income guidelines; be potential first-generation college students; and show need for Upward Bound services. University of Iowa Upward Bound serves students who attend target schools in Burlington, Columbus Junction, Davenport, Fort Madison, Muscatine, and West Liberty, Iowa. Other postsecondary institutions in Iowa also sponsor Upward Bound programs. High school students who do not attend target schools located in the communities served by The University of Iowa's program should ask their counselors whether an Upward Bound program serves their area.
