Summer Medical Scientist Training Program

Web site: http://www.medicine.uiowa.edu/mstp/sumr

The Summer Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) is an intensive eight-week experience for undergraduates interested in pursuing combined M.D./Ph.D. training. Participants gain experience in research laboratories and exposure to clinical medicine and medically relevant research in preparation for careers as physician-scientists.

Students conduct research in the laboratory of a biomedical sciences faculty member, shadow physician-scientists in clinical settings, participate in career development seminars, and attend a weekly seminar series focusing on the intersection of science and medicine.

Participants receive a stipend for the program and live on campus in University housing.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have completed their sophomore or junior year in a bachelor's degree program in the biological or physical sciences. Applicants should submit an application form (available on the program's web site); an official college transcript; and two letters of recommendation. Application deadline is early February for the following summer.

Contact the Medical Scientist Training Program, Carver College of Medicine, for more information.
