You should arrive for your ceremony with cap and gown in hand – or plan to pick up previously ordered apparel at the Book Store student apparel table on the upper concourse.
Graduating students should pick up their Photographer Name Card. Name Card Hand-Out Tables for specific alphabetic groupings are set up on the ground level concourse, or level at which you enter the building. Look for signs to indicate where these tables are located. Tell the staff member your first and last names. By 4:30 p.m., you should join your group to line up where signs indicate. Commencement staff will be there to direct you. At approximately 4:40 p.m.a marshal will escort your group to your designated seating area. You should sit down when you reach your chair. A diploma cover and a University Program booklet listing the graduates names will be on your chair.
Graduating students are divided into groups for seating purposes and should sit with their grouping as this is how seating is arranged. Maps of the seating assignments are posted at each card hand-out station and processional aisle.
If you arrive with a coat or purse make arrangements to leave these items with a family member or friend. You should not have anything in your hand other than your photo name card when the processional begins and throughout the ceremony.
What happens at the ceremony?
The ceremony will begin promptly at 5:00 p.m. The ceremony begins with a Welcome address and several brief speeches. When it’s time for degree candidates to come to the stage to be recognized individually, your marshal will lead your group to the stage. Take your name card with you, hand it to the person reading names at the microphone and walk briskly to center stage to shake hands with the University of Iowa official. You will return to the opposite end of your original row of seats, cross to your original seat and sit down.
After the closing remarks, sometime before 7:00 p.m., graduates will begin the Recessional, in an orderly fashion, under the marshals’ direction.
