  To request a duplicate diploma
  1. Send a notarized statement.
A notarized statement confirms your identity and protects the confidentiality of your student records. Note: Only if your request is being mailed from outside the United States, and bears an international postmark, is the notary requirement waived.  All requests must bear the signature of the UI alum who is requesting the duplicate diploma as well as a current residing/mailing address.

  2. For each copy of your duplicate diploma, send $25 in the form of a check payable to The University of Iowa, or request that the duplication fees be applied to your Ubill. The fee covers the cost of printing and mailing - USPS First Class.  Cash or credit card payment cannot be accepted.  USPS First Class mailings sent outside the U.S. may take 6 - 8 weeks to arrive.

If you reside outside the U.S. you may want to consider having your duplicate diploma mailed to you via Fed Ex. It is necessary for you to request this at the time you order your duplicate diploma, and agree to pay Fed Ex fees in writing.  Fed Ex fees can be charged to your Ubill. To determine the cost of Fed Ex charges, visit the Fed Ex website at:

  3. Please indicate the following:

  • the address to which the diploma should be mailed
  • your full name
  • student ID number or last 4 digits of your SSN
  • title of degree received
  • date (month and year) the degree was awarded
  • an email address or telephone number if we should have questions

Your name on the diploma will appear as it does on your UI student records unless you submit a name change request with the required documentation. (See student forms in the navigation bar to the left.)

All duplicate diplomas will have the notation "Duplicate diploma issued" with the issue date in the lower left corner.

Duplicate diplomas will bear the signatures of the current Board of Regent President, UI President and UI Dean.

Please allow 10 - 14 working days, following the receipt of your request, for the new diploma to be mailed to you.

To request Certified Copies of your University of Iowa diploma

You must have your original UI diploma in order to obtain certified copies. The University of Iowa does not save copies of diplomas. If you do not have your original diploma you must follow the instructions above to order a duplicate diploma from which certified copies may be made.

Graduates sometimes request a duplicate diploma when a certified copy of their diploma would serve their purposes. This kind of documentation is often used for licensing boards, etc.

A certified copy is a photocopy of an existing diploma printed on security paper, notarized, and embossed with the University of Iowa's seal.

If you have your original UI diploma and will send us a clear photocopy, we can create certified copies for you. There is no charge for up to 5 certified copies, and they will be mailed to you approximately two working days after we receive your request.
